"In Search of Being" investigates the intersections of Western conceptions of time, ontology, and colonialism. The animation presents an idealised Western understanding of “being” through a sculptural figure that exists both within and beyond the animated space.
Depicted with three faces, the figure is constrained by linearity; its movement is limited to a vertical rotation of the head, fixing the body within a rigid, one-dimensional plane of existence. A red stripe wrapped around each leg symbolises an attachment to an endless and monotonous cycle, one sustained through fear of its own loss. A second, smaller sculptural figure in the form of a rock functions as a tool used to maintain this cycle, while its ontological significance remains unrecognised by those who depend upon it.
The relationship between the red stripe and the figure’s perpetual adherence to linear time reflects the structures of colonial governance and the imposition of Western temporal systems. Within this framework, the act of “being” becomes inseparable from efficiency, production, accumulation, and colonisation.
